  4.     In public, Japan's energetic new Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu
  5. favors polka-dot ties and baseball games. But in private, according
  6. to a letter written to a minor functionary in 1983, he has more
  7. celestial concerns. He acknowledged in the letter that he was a UFO
  8. buff, one who had looked for unidentified flying objects on trips
  9. to Australia, the South Pole and Switzerland. Alas, he spotted no
  10. flying saucers, but, he wrote, "I'll live on with hopes of . . .
  11. encountering a UFO some day." The Prime Minister has a leg up on
  12. that wish. His cousin Norio Kaifu is an astronomer.
